November

The best way to keep warm on a crisp November morning at the plot is to......dig! Now is the perfect time to be sorting your soil out but no one can dig all day (or not many of us can!) and anyway, there are seeds to be sowing.

  • Keep getting those broad beans in with Aquadulce Claudia one favourite but a variety called Broad Bean Jubilee Hysor is well worth a go. It’s best sown under a cloche at this time of year but if the RHS reckon it is worthy of an Award of Garden Merit then it must be a good ’un. Click here for more details

  • Garlic needs a cold spell to prepare the bulbs to swell next year – so get them in now and let winter do the rest. Ideally at some stage the planted bulbs need a fortnight of freezing weather – and if winter is like last year that shouldn’t be a problem. We have a few varieties to choose from but we particularly like a variety called Solent Wight. Once harvested it keeps for a long time and has a sensational taste. Click here for full details

  • Winter lettuce is a real treat – there’s something highly satisfying in producing salad for the table when it is freezing outside (and costing a fortune in shops!) Winter Gem is a tried and tested variety that will crop throughout winter. Sow seeds in pots or cell trays and plant outdoors when they are an inch or so high. Cloches and cold frames are a must, or even better, get yourself an unheated greenhouse. Click here to see a great offer on a lovely 6 x 6 ft
  • and click here for the seeds

  • There is not a better time to plant bareroot fruit trees than right now. We’ve got a wide selection of varieties but we have to mention the very best variety for the perfect apple pie – our local variety Bramley’s Seedling. We are really excited about our fantastic range of Heritage apple trees in stock - but please get in early as they are already selling out. Click here for full details
  • and there’s plenty more to choose from to make up your own bespoke orchard.

  • And to do all that digging and tree planting you will need a really good spade. One to look out for is a Spear & Jackson E -Series Digging Spade. We reckon it's one of the comfiest around.

  • We know it gets dark too early at this time of year, so we've put together a tremendous range of seed potatoes for you to browse and book on the dark evenings. If you want to grow a small number of a wide range of varieties then our taster packs are the best way to buy.Click here for all the details.
  • Delivery is in January (and that isn't too far away now!)
